Since Keyboard Maestro and Keyboard Maestro Engine have to communicate, the mechanism has to be safe across processes, and it is surprisingly hard to guarantee that with a database. With SQLite for example, it should be possible in theory, but practice is not always the same as theory.
Saving a monolithic file, with safe-save, means that there is no chance of files that include partial changes.
