Is it possible to create a macro to toggle between the desktop and all active windows?

When I am working, my screen is cluttered with windows of different apps, which is what I want.
I am looking for a way to show desktop (which is straightforward) and then (there lies the problem) toggle back to to the cluttered screen the way it was before I "show desktop".
thank you

Is the behaviour you get from pressing F11 to show desktop, and pressing it again to go back to the clutter of windows, something like what you are looking for?

I need to configure F11 in settings. What setting does it correspond to ? thank you

System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Mission Control > Show Desktop

works perfectly. thanks very much. May I ask you if you use Desktop Stacks. If so, for what purposes instead of a folder ? thanks again

I am a bit ashamed to admit that I am one of those with an utter mess on my desktop. As of now a couple of hundred random files β€” no folders, stacks or any system in the madness … For me it’s mostly just a place for dropping screen grabs and other temporary files.
