If you’re referring to being able to select a macro from the menu bar to edit (instead of executing it), try holding down the option key while clicking it.

A slight tangent, but is there a way to show a smart group in the menubar? For example, I'd like to always see the current app's available macros so that I can ⌥-click to jump straight into editing them (a feature I didn't know about!). Perhaps a smart group isn't the way, but it makes logical sense to me.

Not that I am aware of. Smart groups work quite differently from regular macro groups and cannot be interacted with in the same way a a regular macro group.
