Search via enabled macro group or Find macro → in which group is the found macro?

I search for a macro in the enabled macro group or using Find Macro → enter search words → find the macro → how do I determine in which macro group the macro belongs.
Not written at the top of the macro, and the corresponding macro group is not highlighted
thank you

I just did what you described (as least I think so):

  1. Select the Enabled smart group
  2. Hit ⌘F
  3. Enter search word

When I select one of the found macros, I see this:

Macro group is in the top right corner of the macro field (“Finder” in this case).

thank you Tom.

You are the expert and I respect your opinion, but I did more testing and I think that it is a small bug. It may interest the master @peternlewis

Yes, you are right: the name of the group appears at the top right, or more precisely at the extreme top right.

The problem is that if you do a search and click on any macro, the system (KBM or the OS) will initiate a very small amount of downward scroll.

Look at the images below: in the me sometimes image, you see the top of the macro with no scrolling. The name of the group is clearly visible with space above it.
In the image you posted, there was a tiny bit of spontaneous downscrolling. *Finder" is very close to the top but fully visible.
In some cases, as per my image “me other times", 2 things happen: there is a small amount of spontaneous downscrolling, but just enough to hide the macro group name, and the scroll bar disappears which if I understand correctly is normal after a certain time.

This may seem like a trivial effect, but the consequences are very irritating: going through each macro group one by one to find the macro, as happened to me.

thank you Tom for taking interest in my post.

I tried to not express any opinion  Just reported what I get on my computer and setup. And knowing that an issue is not a general issue that everyone experiences, can help to isolate the problem.

I understand the scrolling issue you are describing above, and I tried it again several times but I’m unable to produce the “spontaneous downscrolling” when clicking on a macro. Not even 1mm.
Also tried it with different mice (Apple mouse and a Logitech mouse, which have a very different scrolling behavior).

I’m on macOS 10.15.2 with KM 9.0.4., in case it matters.

Do you have any macros (or other background processes!) running that could affect the mouse or scroll behavior?

Sometimes also seemingly unrelated processes can interfere with stuff. For example, some years ago I had a scrolling problem on my system setup with Karabiner installed and had to uninstall it. Took me a while to find the culprit, because one would think that Karabiner is completely unrelated to window scrolling. (This is just an example how software – especially low-level software – can interfere. I’m not saying that Karabiner is or was a bad program.)

I do have Karabiner installed. It causes all kinds of minor irritants, perhaps here a bit of scrolling but the advantages of having the caps key outweigh the disadvantages. I have also many other background processes.
Initially, I wanted to report a bug, but it is apparent that the problem resides with my computer.
thank you for doing all the testing ! It is very kind of you.

Since this does NOT happen with every Macro, it might be due to the fact that the KM Editor always shows a Macro scrolled to the position when it was last viewed.

In my testing with Keyboard Maestro 9.0.4 on macOS 10.14.6 (Mojave), the KM Editor always showed the Macro Group, UNLESS the Macro was previously scrolled down.

I do NOT have Karabiner installed, but it would really surprise me if it caused the scrolling that you see. Since it simply remaps keys/keystrokes, I don't see why it would affect scrolling.

Of course, you can easily confirm this by disabling Karabiner and testing KM.

very good idea. thanks.
@peternlewis: could it perhaps be better is the scroll bar did not disappear for this and other reasons?

Wether scroll bars disappear is a preference setting in the System Preferences, General preferences.

Personally, I have mine set to "Always show scroll bars", and do not particularly like the modern behaviour. But it is not my place to override the system behaviour.

very interesting. thank you Peter ! it solves my problem

Peter, it would be nice one day if you could describe your settings.

The scroll bar suggeestion is extremely useful. About a year ago you told me that you Prevent Computer from Sleeping in Sys Pref, which was a big help to me in scheduling webinars when the computer was asleep.

It would be hard to figure out which settings I use that have changed from the current defaults after using a Mac for 20+ years.

I have both “Ask to keep …” and “Close windows when…” turned off.

Ronald, this was a good idea, to test it with a different scrollbar visibility in the system settings.

Mine is also set to Always, but interestingly when I set it to one of the others (Automatically or When Scrolling) I still can’t reproduce the “spontaneous downscrolling”. So, that system setting doesn’t seem to be the only relevant factor.

Anyway, nice that you can see the group now.

thank you

I think that there are 2 ways of seeing it.
You perhaps have a fundamentalist approach: finding the cause, which is definitely the best troubleshooting method.
I can just say that @peternlewis 's tip about always showing the scrollbar solved the problem for me because I now immediately recognize the problem when the macro group is not visible.
thank you for your comment.
