Is it possible to use KM to inspect an old, existing .kmmacros
file in such as way that the current set of macros will remain untouched. I know that a .kmmacros
file is an XML file in disguise, but, for my purposes, I really need to view the contents in a high-level KM format.

Use MIM to inspect the contents of a .kmmacros file, with these features:
Full control of the Import process, including picking and choosing which macros to install, renaming them, and changing which group they go into.
See which macros have already been installed, and jump to the installed macro with a click.
Compare a macro to an existing macro, to see what's changed.

You can view each macro's contents in JSON, which may or may not help you, but you can import macros to a different group, it MIM & KM will make sure they don't interfere with your existing macros.
