I don't understand how search strings work (creating smart lists), for example created:1m (or cre:1m) does not give any results. Neither does for example 1y.

From that same web page:
For the created:, modified:, used:, the parameter is a number followed by a letter (s for seconds, m for minutes, h for hours, d for days, or w for weeks).
There's no "y". And "m" means "minute", not "month" as I suspect you were thinking.
