I wanted to substitute ⌥ (option) F6 as the trigger for the tutorial macro that opens the home folder. OMM it doesn’t work. Can anyone else use it successfully? If not, any idea why?
The tutorial lets you select whatever hot key you want, as long as you select one.
I don’t know why you cannot select Option-F6, I had no trouble selecting it.
If you’re on a laptop, you may need to use the Fn key to get function key behaviour instead of hardware keystrokes (brightness etc), depending on your system Keyboard preference settings.
To clarify, option-F6 appears in the macro trigger field, but the macro isn’t triggered when I press the keyboard combination. When I change the trigger back to F6, the macro begins working again. The box next to “use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys” contains a checkmark in keyboard prefs on my system. however toggling that switch didn’t allow option-F6 to trigger the macro. At least it didn’t, until I tried disconnecting my external Apple aluminum keyboard.
I discovered that with no external keyboard connected, option-F6 caused the Keyboard System Preferences pane to be opened if there was no checkmark in the box next to “use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys”. Putting a checkmark in that box then allowed the macro to be triggered as expected with option-F6.
So, because I cannot find any setting on my system that has been configured to open the Keyboard prefpane using option-F6 while no external keyboard is connected, I’m inclined to think that the setting is built into the MacBook Pro firmware or something, although I’m not sure how to find documentation of that status. Anyway, it appears to be a laptop issue. Thanks.
