Why does apply style to clipboard not work with Apple Notes?

thank you

It does -- it's the "Paste" that's failing because of how Notes handles pasted text.

Try using Notes's "Paste and Retain Style" menu item instead:

That'll carry over most of the styling -- I think background colour is always dropped though, maybe some other things as well.

For me the font always changes from whatever it was to Helvetica Neue even though I leave the font unchanged in the KM action. Notes is just trashy when it comes to obeying the clipboard.

thank you. The problem is that "Paste and Retain Style" is usually greyed out, apparently an apple notes bug with no solution.

Yes, it's strange.

Looks like Markdown without being Markdown if I understand correctly. The prompt for my initial post was that none of the KM Style macros worked in Apple Notes.

Apple Notes IMO have one big advantage. Easy to open note in its own window and make it float ("keep on Top") which I do with a KM macro in the morning, and allows me to take notes all day, with a good array of features like lists, etc

I used to do this with Scrivener Scratchpad, but Scrivener is getting old. I also tried this with floating Bear notes which however are pure markdown are not as elegant and format friendly as Apple Notes.

I would not use Apple Notes to create and store notes for the long term for many reasons, one of them being the absence of backup (which is astounding) and the constant risk of suddenly losing everything which does not appear to be uncommon (based on forum posts).

If you can suggest any floating note alternatives I am open to trying anything.

thank you for your comment

For backing up Apple Notes, have a look at this:

I actually really like the Notes App mainly because it is so integrated into the Mac and syncs across all my Apple Devices. I like it because it is simple but can still store all the various bits of info I seem to need to store... For me, I'm not bothered that it has limited formatting options - it still works to save recipes, instructions, scanned documents, secure notes, lists of the paint colours for my house, travel details etc etc which is the kind of thing it is meant for I think. And I also use the newish "quick note" all the time for jotting down temporary stuff (even that note syncs across all devices).

On the reliability front, I've been using Notes, syncing via iCloud for years now without any issues and no loss of data. Likewise, Calendar and Contacts just sync effortlessly (for me anyway).

I see things differently, but let's keep in mind that you are a giant and I am a dwarf in these matters.

Thank you for the link which I read carefully. If I understand correctly all methods "batch" backup all notes

IMO our divergence of opinion may revolve around the definition of the term backup. For me backup means the ability to backup, view and restore individual notes as opposed to restoring an entire database of notes. By that I mean the ability to extract individual notes from the backup of all notes. If I bungle on a technical note I am writing today and want to restore it, I certainly don't want to batch restore all my previous notes many of which I would have modified in the meantime.

My understanding (you would know better) is that apple notes are stored in a cryptic Sqlite database which prohibits the viewing or extraction of individual notes.

I find it rather astounding that notes don't have versioning to compensate for the lack of individual note backup.

For those reasons, I only use Notes as floating individual windows to make notes during the day while I am working in different apps and modalities

At the end of each day, I file the contents of notes into Bear notes and DevonThink.

As far as backing up individual Apple Notes during the day, I use a simple KM macro to "backup" the contents of notes to my clipboard manager (copyem) at regular time intervals.

thank you for your post.

That sounds like a good simple solution. Out of interest, have you had problems losing data from Notes in the past? I'm just curious because I can't think of a time when that has happened to me.

You are right: not apple notes. Bear Notes and the horrible Evernote, yes.
