Account Creation by Invite

I have configured the forum to allow account creation only via invite.

Trust Level 3+ and staff/admin users can issue invites, but I don't intend that to be the usage - people can simply request an invite and the system will create an invite for them and email it to them. This system is rate limited to ten new accounts per day (typical range is 1-4).

I need to figure out a way to make this obvious to potential new users - some way of customising the appearance.

I have added it to the Forum wiki page and the forum FAQ.

The invite system seems to be working.

I have now hooked up a Sign Up button (only seen when users aren't logged in) that goes to the invite page.

Also, the first spammer got through the new system. No idea how bad that is as far as an issue. The invite system is rate limited to 10 per day, so there should be no way to get a flood of them, but it's certainly not ideal that a spammer got through already.

Was there a second spammer? The only spammer I've seen so far was the one that compromised an old legitimate account.

Yes, that was annoying.

There was another one, but the system caught the post and held it, so it was never successfully posted.

So spammers are getting thru the invite system, but it seems that because the invite is set to have them start as a New User, their posts immediately get flagged for approval and I can reject/delete them before anyone sees them.

It'd be nice if I could stop them getting thru, but it may actually be real people doing it in which case it's going to be impossible to stop them entirely without stopping actual users.
