Adding Emojis to Finder Folder ICONS in Tahoe

Anyone have a way to add emojis to folder ICONS in the Finder in a way other than UI Scripting when using the new Customize Folder Service in the contextual menu?

Assuming I understand your question (you want to add emojis to the name?)

  1. Make sure the keyboard icon appears in your system tray. It's in System Preferences, usually under Keyboard / Text Input / Input Sources / Edit / All Input Sources / Show Input Menu in Menu Bar.
  2. When you want to rename a file, start the rename process as you normally would, then when you are ready to type an emoji, use the icon to open "Show Emoji and Symbols" then locate the emoji you want, then click on it.

Voila! Your filename now contains an emoji.

This works in Tahoe, and I presume it works in all previous versions of macOS. I've been using this for many years.

Nah -- in Tahoe you can add emojis to the actual folder icon. A way of doing (a subset of) the customisations we used to do by pasting a new pic into the folder's "Get Info..."

See this AppleInsider article for examples.

I agree with your interpretation. If I didn't say it before, you are very good at interpreting what other people are asking. I wish this website had a feature that told me how long it has been since you have been logged in, since there's no point in me giving answers if you're online.

Erm... I don't log out and I'm in on multiple machines, so probably "3 1/2 years" from when I first joined the Forum to evaluate KM

Thank you both!!!

Yes, 3.5 years nailed it. My unclarity wasted your time @Airy . I apologize for that.

Yes, in Tahoe you evoke the contextual menu of a selected folder and there is a new option to add emojis or tags to the folder. It takes about four clicks to get there. I’ve been uploading lots of documents from folders to AI Drive and find that adding the white checkmark emoji to the folder makes it easier for me to track which folders have been uploaded. When I start doing a lot of that repetitive clicking Keyboard Maestro comes to the rescue.

I’ve had ChatGPT write an AppleScript that points to a folder where I can have an image that replaces the blue folder icon with whatever image I want but that’s not the same as adding an emoji checkmark to the existing folder icon which is what the new Tahoe feature does.

Not the end of the world to keep doing the four clicks but if I can automate it to a single click in a always on screen palette I’d like to do that and explore other ways to mark folders.

Keyboard Maestro already has a tag action and tagging in Tahoe now will recolor the folder icon with the tag’s color but that’s not as clear as an emoji b/c who’s gonna remember what which color means?

Putting a fat white checkmark against a dark green background is pretty darn clear to me that that puppy is done.

That is the reason why I even not try to thinking on solution for someone on this forum  , there is no chance to find answer in reasonable time - better is to sit down looking who will be first @Airy or @Nige_S
