Caution alert for password manager

Hi I am trying to figure out how to program an alert/reminder whenever I need to enter my password for my password manager. Could you please help?

I do live streams at my computer often and want to make sure that I never accidentally have the camera capturing the image of my keyboard or accidentally have a screen capture program recording while I am entering my password (or viewing private/sensitive information). I tried to set up an alert/notification/“text display” macro (to make sure that nothing is being recorded) with Keyboard Maestro that pops up whenever I hit the keyboard shortcut to open my password manager (or whenever the password manager application is open). It works well when I am first opening the application and need to enter my password, but it can’t tell the difference between when I am about to enter the password and when I am already logged in and just want to autofill login fields. Its obnoxious when im already signed in and just trying to autofill my passwords.

Is there any way that i can make the macro work only when the 1password mini window is actually open and I need to enter my password? Any ideas about how this could work?

Also, Is there any way to adjust the time/size/color of the display text macros (or any other similar macros)? If I could edit this and just make like a quickly flashing red box, then I think I could make it work alright.

Thanks, Dan

I don't think I understand the issue.

When you have to login to 1PW mini, the password field does NOT show the actual characters you type. Same as when 1PW does an autofill.

So, if no one can actually see your password, what's the issue?

You’re completely right about that. I have the still issue in two ways though:

  1. I could accidentally open up a private website that i’d rather people not see (ie my bank site with my account number etc). So once i’m logged into 1password, there’s a chance that i could forget that i screen sharing application is open and expose that information to the screen sharing program accidentally.

  2. I have a musical keyboard close to my keyboard and trackpad that i access my computer with. I sometimes set up an overhead camera to record my hands playing the musical keyboard for the live stream. I want to make sure that i don’t leave that camera set up and accidentally capture the trackpad/keyboard as im entering the password on the keyboard.

I think if I were in your position Dan, I would set up a different User Account for the screencasts.

You could then limit the software available to that “Screencast” Account (in particular, excluding 1Password)

You may also want to disable your screencast software in your regular account, just to deter you from temptation.

Hmm thanks for the idea Rather, i hadn’t thought about that.

Do you have any idea how long that would take to set up and switch back and forth from? Could i basically duplicate and auto-sync everything that i do (except for 1password) from my regular account? And could i program a keyboard shortcut to quickly switch between accounts?

Or maybe, instead of using an entirely different user, there’s a way that i could use an keyboard shortcut to toggle access to 1password (using my current user)? So that i can hit a button that will make it so that i will not be able to access the 1password app until i hit that button to allow access to it again?

I have a basic macro that does something similar. It’s a little janky sometimes, but I only activate it when I’m screencasting over the corporate network.

Rules:
When 1Password Activates…

  1. Hide 1Password
  2. Alert: :rotating_light::eyes:Are you off screen? :eyes: :rotating_light:
  3. Show 1Password

It’s very simple. When 1P activates, the window is hidden and I get a stop/continue dialog. Hitting “Continue” runs the next step, which is “show 1Password”. If I hit stop, 1Password stays hidden.

Thanks Jimmy. That works perfectly in most situations, but when i am using the keyboard shortcut to open up the chrome plugin (or keyboard shortcut for autofill login info in chrome) it doesn’t register in Keyboard Maestro as 1password activating and the macro does no trigger.

Does this happen for you as well? Do you have any way of getting around that?

Yes, I have the same issue with the mini window being launched within a browser. I haven’t found a way to get around it yet, that’s part of the “janky” I’m sure there’s some sort of Apple Event trigger that can be scripted against for the mini window that would make things a lot more elegant than just hiding a window.

Typically, I do “business” stuff in Chrome, since my company is heavy into Gsuite. I keep my “personal” browsing (news, twitter, etc.) in Safari. This allows me to segregate bookmarks, extensions, and web history. When I screencast, I use Firefox, which has no extensions installed, including 1Password. This eliminates my need to hide 1password mini when screencasting.
