I can't seem to get any "Type a Keystroke" or "Type Modifiers" working from a Device key trigger. Is this possible?

How is it not working? Just dong nothing?
Check the troubleshooting section to ensure it is actually firing: Macros Not Firing
If it is actually firing, the the evens should be being simulated, so it may be simply that they are not being received or acted upon by the target app for some reason.
