How to make Microsoft Word scroll like Safari and other macOS apps

I tried using a Custom GPT bot Keyboard Maestro by Pieter Heyns to make a macro that would allow me to scroll up or down a Microsoft Word document in the way I would for Safari and other macOS apps. I got as far as being able to tap the page up and page down keys one at a time (which is better than nothing), but the scrolling aspect, where I'd be able to hold down either key and get it to work — the bot just couldn't get it done.

Could anyone help me with this? I use Keyboard Maestro 11. Thanks

I'm confused: How does Word differ from Safari? Both scroll up and down multiple pages if you hold down the Page Up/Down keys.

I am not exatly sure what you are asking but see if these get you in the ball park. They are built around arrow keys on a full keyboard with Home, End, Forward Delete, and Page Down. Modify as needed of course.

Example(s) - Skillet Macros.kmmacros (98 KB)

Until I made that simple macro, the page down and page up keys didn't work for me at all. I use a third-party keyboard, but I can't imagine that's the issue.

In my attempts, I did learn that if I hold down the option key and press Home and End, they work. But this doesn't work for Page Up/Down

Thanks! I'll try it

They don't seem to work. I enabled them, and when I press control-end/control-home, it just made the text larger or smaller.

For me to scroll up and down in Word (which I have to use for work), I have to use my mouse, and it's causing a lot of discomfort. This is true in other apps like Slack, Asana, ChatGPT, etc. I'm guessing it's because the apps aren't macOS native (or whatever you call it, sorry, blanking), but it's driving me increasingly nuts.

I just want to map the Page Up/Page Down keys (and ideally, the arrow keys) to work as they would in an app like Safari, Ulysses, Preview, etc. Does that make sense?

Happy to answer any questions to clarify. I really appreciate your help!

What version of Word do you have? And I have both Apple and third-party keyboards, and Page Up and Down work as expected in Word.

If it's happening for multiple apps, then I think I would be at least a little suspicious of your third party keyboard. What make and model are you using? If it has a driver available, what version (if any) do you have installed?

On my Sequoia (15.4.1) machine here, I'm using a Logitech MX Mechanical Mini (with the latest Logi Options+ app) along with the latest desktop version of Word 365 (v16.96.1 - updated just a few hours ago) - and the [pg up] and [pg dn] buttons are working as expected.

Even if just to rule it out (since you say multiple apps are affected) how is Word configured for Page Up? Go to Tools > Customise Keyboard…

  1. Scroll down the Categories to All Commands
  2. type "pageup" in the Commands filter
  3. select "PageUp" in the results

Do you have "Page Up" set as your current key, as shown below?

I use Word 16.96 on a MacBook Pro M2 using 15.3.2 (I realize that I have to update it, thought it was doing it automatically).

I'm using a Kinesis Ergo Advantage2, and I checked the support page. Maybe I need to update the firmware? I've never downloaded a driver for it ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I checked the customize keyboard, and it's set the way you're showing it. Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think this has always been an issue. Word does so many stupid updates that I'm thinking I didn't notice it initially, but now it's becoming a problem...

UPDATE: Now page up/down seems to work on Word. Go figure!

Remap it to comand and you should be fine. That is because that is how you zoom in and out since control with the scroll wheel does that in MS Word.
