Restoring Macros/Setup From Backup

Hi,

I've just had the SSD on my Mac replaced and I'm trying to restore my Keyboard Maestro setup from a Carbon Copy Cloner backup (I'm setting everything up from scratch rather than restore the entire backup using CCC or Migration Assistant). I've followed the instructions here but none of my macros or settings show up in Keyboard Maestro.

To be clear, these are the steps I took:

  1. Quit KM and engine;
  2. Delete ~/Library/Application Support/Keyboard Maestro;
  3. Copy contents of the above folder on the external drive backup to the same folder on local;
  4. Delete anything with the com.stairways prefix from ~/Library/Preferences/ ;
  5. Copy all plist files with the com.stairways from the backup to the above folder;
  6. Launch KM and restart engine.

Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

Cheers,
fort

That looks correct.

After replacing the plist files you may need to restart as the system may cache them. But they only store preferences not macros.

If you are replacing the ~/Library/Application Support/Keyboard Maestro/Keyboard Maestro Macros.plist file, and if the folder and the file have the correct ownership permission, and if Keyboard Maestro editor and engine are not running, that is all you have to do to restore the macros from the backup.

Thanks @peternlewis . For some reason, Keyboard Maestro refused to do anything with the files I restored from my backup (might be a perms issue, as you mention). Luckily, I keep two backups just in case, and copying the files over from the other drive worked.
